Vietnamese monk who set himself on fire. Man, try to get a laugh out of the crowd after that.

Soulful 37-year-old at her father's funeral. Climbs weeping to the podium, wipes her eyes, and knocks out a pitch-perfect "Amazing Grace". Not a quaver, not a hitch, with such power that the whole room rings -- even the atheists chorus "Amen" when she's done.

Hmm. These are ... depressing. I was hoping for something more absurd and light-hearted.

Also, I hope Anon is not related to me.

Sorry, depression totally unintended. Was in fact a powerfully life-affirming experience hearing Jan not merely bear her grief, but seize it and channel it into uplifting every one of us. I can still hear her voice! What a courageous woman.

Now me, on the other hand...lemme tell you that was one LONG walk to the podium, armed with nothing but words. The reason I posted the anecdote, in fact, is that the first words of my father's eulogy turned out to be "Geez, Sis, you always were a hard act to follow."

I did make my aunts and uncles nod "Yeah!" and my mom cry, though, so I must've done something right. I might write an OK tech article but I rule the mushy stuff!

And hey, it all happened a decade before you ever met me, so depress not. I don't. (OK, I'm pissed off that my 'rents did themselves out of seeing their grandkids, but their choice.)

Good God. He's been gone almost 20 years? And again: You and I have known each other for 10?!!

I plead kids: made the past decade go "WHOOSH!"

That was beautiful, Rick! Thank you. I think you have put me in the spirit for tonight's gig. Sometimes you have to rev yourself up more than others and tonight is one of those nights when I'd rather eat the cookies I baked and watch TV!
